Mining

Mine ore for Smithing, find uncut gems along the way, and where to find every rock.

What Mining does

Mining lets you mine ore from rocks. Ore goes to the Furnace to become bars for Smithing, and every rock has a small chance to give an uncut gem as well, which Crafting turns into cut gems and jewellery. See Mining for every unlock by level.

How to mine

Tap a rock. Your hero swings away until the rock runs out, then walks to the next free rock of the same kind nearby. Each swing can miss: the higher your level above the rock's requirement, the more often you get ore.

Your pickaxe

You mine with the pickaxe in your tool slots, under your hero in the Character window (every hero starts with a Bronze Pickaxe). Better pickaxes mine faster and need more Mining: iron at 10, steel at 20, mithril at 30 and emberforged at 45. Magic and rare pickaxes can add extra ore, Mining XP, gems, gold, or ore that comes out already smelted (if your Smithing is high enough for the bar). You can also smith your own at the Anvil. See Gathering tools.

Rocks

Where to mine

  • Copper and tin: just north-west of Emberfall. Brann, by the campfire in town, sends you there on your first day. Both give an occasional Uncut Sapphire.
  • Iron: further north-west of Emberfall, in the Sunscorch Desert, and in the Cinder Wastes. Iron (and anything better) can give an Uncut Ruby.
  • Coal: north of Emberfall, and in every region from the desert onwards. The Cinder Wastes has the most.
  • Rimeiron: the Rimefall Highlands.
  • In the Ashen Depths: from depth 2, many floors have a rock in one of the rooms: iron at first, coal deeper down.
