Chat, Reporting and Blocking

How chat is filtered, how to report or block another player, and what moderators can do about it.

Chat

Everything said in chat (the town channel and party chat) goes to other players through a filter. Slurs, strong swearing and sexual words are starred out (*****) — the rest of the line still goes through, so a slip of the tongue doesn't swallow your whole message. The filter sees through the usual tricks: spacing letters out, swapping in numbers or symbols, stretching letters or using look-alike characters. It is built to leave ordinary words alone, so place names, game terms and words that just happen to contain a rude one are not touched.

Hero names follow the same rules, only stricter: a name with an offensive word in it (even run together with other words, or hidden behind numbers) can't be picked. Choose another one on the name screen.

Reporting a player

If someone is harassing people, using hate speech, spamming, cheating or has an offensive name, report them. A moderator reads every report.

  • From chat: on a computer, click or right-click one of their chat lines; on a phone, press and hold it. Choose Report. Opening the chat box also shows the last few lines, so you can report something said a minute ago.
  • From their card: on a computer, right-click their hero to look at them; on a phone, tap or press and hold their hero. Use the Report button.

Pick a reason and, if it helps, add a short note. Their latest chat is sent along with the report automatically, and the line you reported from is marked. The player you report is never told who reported them.

You get a confirmation as soon as the report arrives. Reporting the same player again before a moderator has looked at your first report won't add a second one, and there is a limit on how many reports one player can send in an hour, so please report what matters.

Blocking a player

Blocking someone means:

  • you no longer see anything they say, in the town channel or in party chat, including lines already on your screen;
  • they can't invite you to a party (and you can't invite them while they're blocked);
  • neither of you can pass the other loot.

They aren't told that you blocked them, and they can still see your chat. Your block list is kept with your hero, so it works on every device you play on and stays after you log out.

To block, use Block on the same chat-line menu or hero card you'd use to report. To unblock, open Settings: the Blocked players list has an Unblock button next to each name (or use the hero card again).

What moderators can do

Moderators go through reports and decide what happens, following the Code of Conduct (Settings → Code of Conduct, or ashenvale.io/rules):

ActionWhat it means
No actionThe report didn't show a broken rule.
MuteYou can't chat for a set time (an hour up to several weeks). You can still play normally. When you try to talk you're told why and until when; chat comes back by itself.
BanYou can't log in. The game tells you why when you try. Your hero, items and progress are kept, not deleted, so if the ban is lifted everything is as you left it.

A moderator may also rename a hero whose name breaks the rules. The new name has to pass the same checks as a new hero's name, and you are told why it changed: right away if you are playing, otherwise the next time you log in. Your hero, items and progress stay exactly as they were, and the new name shows everywhere the old one did (party, market, leaderboards, chat). If you think it was a mistake, email us (see below).

When a player deletes their account, they leave everyone's block lists, any mute or ban on them ends, and reports about them are deleted with their chat. Reports they made about others stay for the moderators, without their name.

Appeals and contact

Think a mute or ban was a mistake? Email support@ashenvale.io with your hero's name and what happened. The same address is for anything that needs a person: a serious threat, someone sharing personal information, or a problem that the report button doesn't cover.

Never post your recovery code in chat: nobody from Ashenvale will ever ask for it there, and anyone who has it can play as you. See the FAQ for keeping your hero safe.
