FAQ

Saving and recovery codes, playing on phone and PC with the same hero, the cosmetic-only shop, ads, and other common questions.

Your hero and your progress

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your hero is kept online, and everything is saved as you play: your skills, gear, bank, gold, pets, house and collection log. There's no save button to remember.

What's "Play offline"?

If the game can't connect to Ashenvale when you start it, it offers to let you play offline. That's fine for a quick try, but nothing you do offline is saved: the hero and everything it earns are gone when you close the game. The Grand Market, chat and visiting friends also need a connection. To keep your progress, restart the game while you're connected.

What's a recovery code?

Your recovery code is the key to your hero. It's how you bring your hero to a new phone, back after reinstalling the game, or onto a computer.

To find it: open Settings and scroll to Account recovery. Tap the code to show it, and use the save button to keep a copy somewhere safe.

How do I restore my hero on a new device?

On the name screen, tap I already have a hero (recovery code), type in your code, and confirm the hero it shows is yours.

I lost my recovery code. What now?

As long as you still have the game on a device where you're playing that hero, you can open Settings and see the code again. Save it somewhere safe right away. The code is the only way to move a hero, so please keep a copy.

Worlds

What are worlds?

When lots of heroes are playing, Ashenvale runs several copies of the land at once, called worlds (World 1, World 2, …). Each world has its own monsters, bosses and dungeons, so nobody has to queue for a crowded Emberfall. You don't pick one: the game puts you in a world with room when you start playing. The Party window shows which world you're in.

What's shared between worlds?

Almost everything. Your hero is the same in every world: skills, gear, bag, bank, gold, pets and house. The Grand Market, chat and the hiscores are shared by all worlds, so you can buy from and sell to anyone. What's per world: the monsters and loot on the ground, world bosses, and dungeon runs.

How do I play with a friend who is in another world?

Open the Party window. Friends in another world are listed under In other worlds, and a party mate who is elsewhere shows which world they're in. Press Join world and you travel to their world, then invite them to your party as usual. You can't join a world that's full.

Can I change worlds?

Joining a friend is the way to pick a world. Otherwise, when you start the game again later you may land in a different world. If you only lose your connection for a moment, you come back to the world you were in.

Phones and computers

Can I play on my phone and my computer with the same hero?

Yes. Your hero is the same everywhere. On the other device, choose I already have a hero and enter your recovery code. Your hero, bank, house and everything else come with you.

What are the controls on a computer?

WASD or the arrow keys to move (or click to walk), click a monster or hold F to attack, Space to dodge, 1 2 3 for abilities, Q to heal, and letter keys for every menu. See Controls for the full list.

Does my hero keep working if I close the game?

Yes, for a while. If you were gathering or crafting when you left, you're credited for the time you were away when you come back, at a slightly reduced rate and up to a limit. In a browser, your hero keeps working at full speed as long as the tab stays open. See AFK skilling.

The shop

Is Ashenvale pay-to-win?

No. The shop is cosmetic only. Nothing you can buy changes your power, your loot, your XP or the economy. Gold, items, XP and loot can never be bought with real money. The only way to get another player's item is to trade for it in game.

That's a promise the whole game is built on: every item's price on the Grand Market is what players pay in gold, and nobody can buy their way past it.

What's in the shop?

ProductPriceWhat you get
Showcase Pet$3.99This week's featured companion look. One is featured each week, and once bought it's yours forever.
Remove Ads$4.99No more ads, ever. A one-time purchase.
Ashenvale+$9.99/moNo ads, each week's showcase pet free while you're subscribed, and a gold ✦ supporter mark next to your name in the world, in chat and on the hiscores.

What does a showcase pet do?

It changes how your companion looks, nothing more. It's a skin: your real pet still follows you underneath, and its bonus stays exactly the same. See Pets.

Ads

Are there ads?

Ads are kept light and out of your way:

  • Never during a fight, and never in the first few minutes of a session.
  • Only at natural pauses: the end of a Depths or lair run, a waystone warp, or waking up after a fall.
  • Never often. There's always a good long gap between them.
  • Nothing is locked behind an ad, and there are no "watch an ad for a reward" offers.

Remove Ads or Ashenvale+ turns them off completely.

Playing with others

How do I play with friends?

Everyone shares the same world, so just meet up. Fight side by side and you each get full XP and your own loot. Form a party (right-click or press and hold a hero, then Invite to party) to go into the Depths, lairs and the Throne as a group and share XP. See Parties. You can also visit each other's houses. See Fighting with friends.

Can I give an item to a friend?

If you're in a party together, gear you picked up with them around can be passed straight to them for a while after you pick it up. See Passing loot. Otherwise, trade goes through the Grand Market: list the item and let your friend buy it.

Can other players attack me?

Only inside the Wilderness, a walled ring you have to choose to enter, after swearing an oath at its gate. Everywhere else in Ashenvale is safe from other players.

Common questions

What happens when I die?

On the surface you wake up in town with everything you had. In the Depths or a lair, the run ends but you keep your loot. Only in the Wilderness, and only if another player kills you, do you lose what you carry. See Dying.

Why can't I wear this item?

Either it needs a higher skill level (check the requirement on its tooltip), or it's unidentified. Read an Identify Scroll first. See Identifying.

Where do I get Identify Scrolls?

Every town's provisioner sells them (like Old Harl in Emberfall), monsters and chests drop them, and bosses drop a few every time. Bounties and Brann's first tasks pay some too.

My bag is full. What do I do?

Press Identify all in your bag, then use its Sell… menu to sell plain items to a merchant all at once (your locked items are never sold). Put keepers in the bank and list anything valuable on the Grand Market. Turn on auto-sell to have junk turned into gold the moment you pick it up. Materials never take bag space (you can carry up to 999 of each, and bank more). See Selling to merchants.

How do I get back to town?

Walk, use a waystone in any town you've visited, or read an Ashgate Scroll to open a portal home. From the Depths, a lair or a house, you can leave in one tap, and a slain lair or Depths boss leaves a Homeward Gate by its body.
