Affixes & Roll Ranges

How item properties roll, what tiers and item level mean, and how to read a tooltip like an expert.

Properties, or affixes

The random properties on magic and rare items are called affixes. Each one boosts a stat: more damage, more life, faster attacks, more magic find, and so on. There are two kinds:

  • Prefixes go before the item's name on magic items: a Cruel sword has more damage, a Vital helm more life.
  • Suffixes go after it: a ring of Precision has more critical chance, gloves of Haste more attack speed.

Magic items have one or two affixes. Rares have three to five, a mix of prefixes and suffixes. An item never has the same affix twice.

Each affix can only roll on certain slots. Movement speed only rolls on boots, for example, and +% Damage only on weapons. Gathering tools have a pool of their own (see Tool affixes).

Some affixes do more than raise a number: Barbed and of Spines return damage to monsters that hit you, and of Barrage fires piercing bolts when you hit. Aura properties ("Level 6 Might Aura") only come on uniques and rune words. See Auras, Thorns & Projectiles.

Tiers and item level

Every affix has several tiers, each with its own range of values. Higher tiers only unlock at higher item levels, and an item's level comes from the monster (or chest) that dropped it. That is why a sword from a deep Nightmare boss can roll numbers a sword from a wolf never could, even if they share a name.

When an affix rolls, it leans toward the best tiers its item level allows, then picks a value within that tier's range.

Reading a tooltip

Every property on a tooltip shows the range it could have rolled in, in square brackets:

+154% Damage [131–165] ★

  • +154% Damage is what this item actually has.
  • [131–165] is the range for that affix's tier on this item.
  • ★ marks a top roll, at or near the best possible value for its tier.

This makes it easy to judge an item. A property sitting at the top of its range is worth a lot more than one at the bottom, and Price Check knows it (see Price Check).

Tooltips also compare a new item against what you're wearing, so you can see at a glance what you'd gain and lose.

Special markings

  • Red properties were added by corruption. See Crafting Orbs.
  • +1 to +5 after an item's name means it has been empowered with Emberstone. Every property is boosted, and the ranges shown are boosted to match.
  • Built-in stats (a base's damage, armour, or a ring's small bonus) don't roll. Every item of that base has them.

What makes a good item

There's no single "best" roll. It depends on who's wearing it:

  • Melee heroes love damage, attack speed, life per hit, life and armour.
  • Ranged and Magic heroes love damage, critical chance and attack speed, with enough life to survive a mistake.
  • Treasure hunters stack magic find and gold find.
  • Skillers wear gear with gathering speed and skill XP bonuses while they work, and hunt for well-rolled tools.

A rare with three great affixes for one style can be worth a fortune, while a rare with five mediocre ones might be worth next to nothing. Always Price Check.
