Mounts & Companions

VERY rare mounts you learn once and ride forever, faster the rarer they are, and the Companions window that brings your pet, your mounts and your summons together.

Mounts

A mount is a creature you learn to ride, once, forever. They are some of the rarest finds in the game — rarer than most pets, rarer than almost anything short of a lair unique.

You don't find a mount directly. You find its Reins — an item like any other, tradeable and sellable until you use it. Use the Reins from your bag and the mount joins your Companions window for good; the Reins are used up. A spare Reins for a mount you already know can still be sold or traded — it doesn't teach you anything twice.

Riding

Choose your active mount in the Companions window, then mount up:

  • On a computer, press H to mount or dismount.
  • On a phone, tap the mount button in the collapsed menu at the top right (it only appears once you know a mount).

Mounting takes 1 second standing still — moving, attacking or getting hit cancels it. You can't start mounting within 3 seconds of a fight, yours or one that just found you.

Once mounted you move faster: +40% for the mounts everyone eventually finds, up to +60% for the rarest of them all. Your pet and any summons you lead keep up — they simply move at your speed.

Getting off

You dismount the instant you:

  • Attack, use an ability, or dash.
  • Take any damage.
  • Die.
  • Enter a lair, the Ashen Depths, the Ember Throne, an Ember Rift, or a house.

Where they come from

Every mount drops from somewhere specific — a particular pack of monsters, a world boss, an Ember Rift's guardian at a high enough tier, or a gathering skill. The rate is exact and never changes:

Barrow StagRare40%Barrow Stags in the Gloamwood (champions most of all)
Mossback BearRare40%Woodcutting: any tree, very rarely

Every mount page lists its own drop rate; check a monster's or a boss's own page for the number too, right alongside everything else it can drop.

The Companions window

Everything that follows you lives in one window: your pet, your mount, and a look at your gear summons.

  • On a computer, press J, or drag the window open from the collapsed menu; it floats like any other window and remembers where you leave it.
  • On a phone, open it from the collapsed menu at the top right.

Inside:

  • Pet. A grid of every pet in the game — yours in colour, the rest greyed out with where they come from. Tap one you own to make it follow you; tap it again to walk alone. See Pets.
  • Mount. The same idea for mounts: a grid, yours in colour, the rest greyed out with their source and their rate (say, "drops from the Sandmaw (1/300)"). Tap one you own to make it your active mount.
  • Details. Tap anything in either grid and a panel shows its bonus, where it comes from, and — once you have it — the day you got it.
  • Summons. A read-only look at whatever your gear is currently binding to you, with the same stance button as your summon row (or the X key). This is a look, not a picker: to change which summons you lead, change your gear. See Summoning.

The Companions window replaces the old standalone Pets menu — everything it did is still here, alongside your mounts and your summons.

Collecting them

Every mount you learn is recorded in your Collection Log, in its own Mounts tab, silhouetted until you find it. Learning mounts earns its own achievements, building up to a title for anyone who learns them all: the Horselord.
