Prayer & Rites
Train Prayer with bones, spend Prayer points on rites, and learn every rite from Ashen Hide to Ascension.
The rites of the Ashen dead
Long before Emberfall, the people of the ashlands burned their dead and asked them for strength. The dead still answer. Prayer is the skill of those old rites: switch one on and it gives you a blessing for as long as your Prayer points hold out. The higher rites go far beyond simple blessings. Spirits of the dead fight at your side, a pyre burns around you, and your ancestors catch a killing blow.
Training Prayer
Prayer trains on bones. Most monsters with a skeleton leave bones behind when they die. Tougher monsters leave bigger bones, and bosses leave a pile.
| Bone | Where from | XP buried |
|---|---|---|
| Monsters below level 22 | 4.5 | |
| Monsters of level 22–49, and the early bosses | 15 | |
| Monsters of level 50 and up, and later bosses | 72 |
Some creatures, like imps, slimes and wraiths, have no bones at all.
There are two ways to use bones:
- Bury them anywhere, from your bag. Your hero kneels and digs a small grave. Choose to bury one or keep going until you run out.
- Offer them at an altar for 3× the XP. The only altar is the Warden's Altar, beside the Warden's arena far north-east of Emberfall. Every offering also tops your Prayer points back up.
Prayer points
Your Prayer level is also your number of Prayer points. Rites drain points for as long as they're switched on, and stronger rites drain faster. When you run out, every rite switches off.
Getting points back:
- At the Warden's Altar, recharge to full at once (offering bones there also refills you).
- Resting somewhere safe, in a town or your house, with no rites switched on, refills them in well under a minute.
- The
Soul Harvest rite gives a point back with every kill.
Rites also switch off if you die.
Using rites
Open the Prayer menu (the prayer button, or R on a computer) and tap a rite to switch it on or off. You can run several at once, as long as you have the points to pay for them.
Rites come in groups, and only one rite from each group can be on at a time. Switching on a stronger rite in the same group replaces the weaker one:
- Hide (less damage taken):
Ashen Hide,
Cinderbark,
Obsidian Skin - Wrath (more damage):
Kindled Wrath,
Blazing Wrath,
Inferno Wrath - Sight (more critical chance):
Ember Eye,
Kestrel Sight,
Searing Focus - Spirits:
Bonewight,
Barrow Host
Ascension counts as a hide, a wrath and a sight rite at once, so it replaces all three.
Every rite
| 1 | 3 | Take 5% less damage | |
| 4 | 3 | +5% damage | |
| 8 | 3 | +3% critical chance | |
| 12 | 6 | Take 10% less damage | |
| 15 | 6 | +10% damage | |
| 19 | 6 | +6% critical chance | |
| 22 | 2 | Recover 1% of your life every second, even mid-fight | |
| 26 | 8 | A spirit of the dead fights beside you, striking whatever you fight | |
| 30 | 12 | Take 15% less damage | |
| 34 | 12 | +15% damage | |
| 38 | 12 | +9% critical chance | |
| 42 | 6 | Every kill heals 5% of your life and returns a Prayer point | |
| 48 | 10 | A shield of embers soaks up damage (15% of your life), re-forming 8s after it breaks | |
| 56 | 20 | Three spirits of the dead fight beside you | |
| 64 | 4 | A killing blow leaves you at 30% life instead, but burns every Prayer point you have | |
| 70 | 14 | You burn: every enemy close to you takes fire damage each second | |
| 80 | 26 | +20% damage, +10% critical chance, 15% less damage taken, +10% movement speed |
No matches.
The drain column is Prayer points per minute while the rite is on.
The special rites
- Mending Smoke heals a little of your life every second, even mid-fight. Cheap to run, and it adds up.
- Bonewight and Barrow Host call spirits of the dead to fight beside you. They strike whatever you're fighting, and grow stronger as your Prayer level rises. They can't be hurt.
- Soul Harvest heals you and returns a Prayer point with every kill. Run it while clearing packs and it nearly pays for itself.
- Ember Aegis wraps you in a shield of embers that soaks up damage. When it breaks, it re-forms a few seconds later.
- Ancestors' Vigil catches a blow that would have killed you and leaves you standing with some life, but it burns every Prayer point you have and switches all your rites off. Recharge and switch it back on to be protected again.
- Pyre Aura sets you alight: every enemy close to you takes fire damage every second. Its damage grows with your Prayer level.
- Ascension is the pinnacle: more damage, more critical chance, less damage taken and faster movement, all at once. It drains quickly.
Tips
- Early on, Ashen Hide or Kindled Wrath cost little and help a lot. Switch them on for tough packs and off while walking.
- For bosses, run your best hide rite. Taking less damage from the slam is worth more than hitting a little harder.
- For long clears, Soul Harvest plus a cheap wrath rite keeps your points and life topped up.
- Prayer counts toward your combat level (half as much as Defence and Vitality).
