#What Smithing does

Smithing turns ore into metal and metal into gear. It has two halves:

1. Smelting at a Furnace: ore (and Coal, for the better metals) becomes bars.
2. Smithing at an Anvil: bars become swords, helms, gauntlets, boots, body armour and shields, and the pickaxes and hatchets you gather with (see Gathering Tools).

#How to smith

Walk up to a Furnace or Anvil and tap it. Pick a recipe and how many to make, and your hero works through the batch.

Every piece of gear you smith has a chance to come out magic, with one or two rolled properties. The higher your Smithing level, the higher the item level of what you make, and the better its properties can roll. A master smith's work is worth far more than an apprentice's.

#Where to smith

• Emberfall has both a Furnace and an Anvil, right by the town square.
• Qadir Oasis in the desert has a Furnace.
• Hearthguard in the Cinder Wastes and Kindlehold in the Highlands have both.
• Build a Home Forge in your house to smelt and smith without leaving home. See Houses.

#Tips

• Smelting is quick XP; smithing is where the value is. Bars also sell well to other smiths and to house-builders.
• Sell what you don't need. Magic gear you've smithed can be sold on the Grand Market. Price Check it first: a good roll can be worth far more than its bars.
• Steel and better need coal. Keep a steady supply, or buy it on the market.
• Smithing and smelting can turn up a rare Forge Sprite.
