Uniques
Legendary named items with rolled ranges and special effects, where they drop, and how to chase them all.
Legends with a name
A unique is a legendary item made by hand, not by the dice. Every Emberfang is Emberfang: the same base and the same kinds of properties. But each property still rolls within a range, so one Emberfang can be a lot better than another.
You'll know one when you see it: a gold name and a gold beam of light. Uniques drop unidentified, so read an
Identify Scroll to find out what you've got.
Browse them all on the uniques page.
Special effects
Many uniques do more than add stats. They have a special effect:
- Bows that split their arrows, loose extra volleys, or bounce shots between enemies.
- Staffs that call meteors, chain lightning, or turn every bolt into a fireball.
- Blades that echo each swing, send out flaming waves, or cut down weakened enemies outright.
- Armour that freezes or burns whoever strikes you, and boots that leave a burning trail.
- Rings that make kills explode, or cough up extra gold.
Special effects are listed on the item's page and in its tooltip.
Summon-granting uniques
A handful of uniques bind a creature to you while you wear them, like a spectral tiger or a young fire dragon. It walks beside you and fights what you fight. See Summons.
Where uniques come from
Every unique has a home. Each one sits in a drop table (see Drop tables), so you know where to hunt it:
- Monster uniques drop from one kind of monster:
Thunderclap from trolls,
Ricochet Band from bog slimes,
Dragon's Eye from Ember Watchers. Some belong to a whole family, like
Emberstride, which any wolf can carry. - Region uniques can drop from anything that lives in their region, like
Starfall Grips in the Sunscorch Desert. - Boss uniques only drop from their boss. They're usually a step above the other uniques of the same level.
- Tool uniques drop from the monsters that carry that kind of tool. See Unique tools.
- Any monster also has a tiny chance (1/3,000 per kill) to drop any world unique that suits its level, and treasure chests can hold one too.
Every unique's page lists exactly where it drops and how often, like "1/500" from its monster, and better odds from pack leaders and champions.

In Nightmare, lair bosses are more likely to drop their uniques, and those uniques come with a higher item level.
Making a unique better
Uniques can't be reforged, but they can still be improved:
- Temper it with
Ashen Ichor to push its weakest property up toward the top of its range. - Empower it with
Emberstone for up to +5. - Corrupt it with an
Ashen Shard, if you're feeling brave.
See Crafting Orbs for the risks.
Collecting them all
Every unique you loot is recorded in your Collection Log, along with when you first found it. Finding your first, then ten different ones, then every single one earns achievements, titles and rewards. See Collection Log & Achievements.
