Gathering Tools

Pickaxes, hatchets and fishing rods: tiers, tool affixes, unique tools, and where to find or make them.

Your three tools

Every hero wears three tools alongside their gear: a pickaxe for Mining, an axe for Woodcutting and a fishing rod for Fishing. They sit in their own row of slots under your hero in the Character window, so they never take bag space while you wear them.

You start with a Bronze Pickaxe, a Bronze Hatchet and an Oak Fishing Rod. Lost them? Old Harl in Emberfall sells all three, cheap. You can still gather with an empty tool slot, but only at 50% speed.

A tool only counts for its own skill: the fastest pickaxe in the land does nothing for your fishing. Tools add nothing to combat.

Tiers

Each tool comes in five tiers. A better tier gathers faster, and needs a higher level in its skill to wear.

Mithril tools can't be made by anyone alive: they only turn up as loot.

Tool affixes

Tools roll magic, rare and unique just like gear, but from their own pool of affixes (combat affixes never roll on tools, and tool affixes never roll on gear):

BountifulPrefixYield %Bountiful Iron Pickaxe
GildedPrefixGather GoldGilded Iron Pickaxe
of LearningSuffixGather XP %Iron Pickaxe of Learning
of the SeekerSuffixRare Find %Iron Pickaxe of the Seeker
of RefiningSuffixRefine %Iron Pickaxe of Refining

What each one does, for the tool's own skill:

  • Gathering Speed (Brisk): more attempts in the same time.
  • Extra resource (Bountiful): a chance that a gather gives two instead of one.
  • Gathering XP (of Learning): more XP per gather. For Mining it adds to any Mining XP from your gloves, helm and jewellery, which still work as before.
  • Rare Find (of the Seeker): multiplies the chance of an uncut gem. Rocks already give gems now and then; with Rare Find, trees and fishing spots can too (a 1% base chance, raised by your Rare Find).
  • Refining (of Refining): a chance that what you gather comes out already worked, with the XP for the work: ore as a bar (Smithing), logs as planks (Crafting), raw fish cooked (Cooking). You need the level for that recipe; below it, the ore stays ore. Coal is never refined.
  • Gold (Gilded): each gather also finds a few coins, raised by your Gold Find.

Magic, rare and unique tools take crafting orbs like any other item: re-roll them with a Chaos Ember, temper them with Ashen Ichor, empower them with Emberstone or corrupt them with an Ashen Shard (see Crafting Orbs). Tools never have sockets.

Where tools come from

Monsters. Tools drop from the monsters who would carry them, at the best tier the monster's level has reached (the Min Item Level column above), normal, magic or rare; magic find helps just as it does for gear. Pack leaders, champions and bosses carry them far more often:

The frogmen of Stiltwater never part with their rods; the bog folk who share their swamp are less careful. Each tool's page lists every monster and its exact rate, and so do the unique tools' pages.

Smithing and Crafting. Pickaxes and hatchets are smithed at an Anvil from bars; fishing rods are made at a Crafting Bench from logs. Like any smithed gear, they sometimes come out magic.

Tips

  • Upgrade your pickaxe first if you smith: Refining on a pickaxe saves you trips to the furnace, and pays Smithing XP.
  • A Bountiful rod is the best AFK tool there is: fishing spots never run out, and extra fish count while you're away. (Refining, gold and gems need you there.)
  • Tools are gear: they can be traded on the Grand Market, banked, and lost in the Wilderness like anything else you wear.
