Two ways to play, one hero

Ashenvale plays on phones and tablets with touch controls, and in a web browser on a computer with keyboard and mouse. Your hero is the same on both: bring it across with your recovery code (see the FAQ).

Phones and tablets

ActionHow
MovePut your thumb down anywhere on the game and drag. A joystick appears under your thumb.
AttackHold the big attack button. Your hero attacks the nearest enemy in range for as long as you hold it.
DodgeTap the boots button: a quick dash in the direction you're moving, and nothing can hit you while you're in it. It has a short cooldown.
AbilitiesTap one of the three small buttons around the attack button. A locked ability tells you the level it needs. With Auto-cast on (the default on phones), these shrink to small cooldown icons instead — your hero fires them on its own, nothing to tap.
HealTap the potion button. It drinks a potion when you're low, and otherwise eats your best food.
AshgateTap the scroll button beside the potion to read an Ashgate Scroll and open a town portal. Long-press it to see what it does. See Ashgates.
Fight a monsterTap it. Your hero walks over and fights it.
Pick up lootTap the loot's name on the ground.
Use somethingTap a rock, tree, fishing spot, station, merchant or door.
Look at a creaturePress and hold on a monster (or player) for a moment. A card shows its name, level and how dangerous it is for you.
GatesTap an Ashgate or a Homeward Gate to use it (your hero walks in; its name shows for a moment). Walking over a gate never takes you through. Press and hold one for its card.
Inspect a playerTap another hero to see their gear.
PartyPress and hold a hero, then Invite to party. The Party button opens your party. See Parties.

Your bag, skills, market, settings, shop, collection log, Companions (pets, mounts and summons — see Mounts & Companions) and chat are folded behind one small button in the top-right corner. Tap it to fan the icons out, tap one to open it, and tap the button again (or anywhere else on screen) to fold them back away — they're out from underfoot until you need them. If you know a mount, the same fan-out has a button to mount up or get off. Prayer opens from its own bar in your health panel, top-left. One menu shows at a time; the row of menu tabs under each menu's title switches straight to another.

Windows

On a computer, menus open as windows that float over the game, so you can keep playing with them open. Open as many as you like at once (the market, your bag and a forge side by side, say).

  • Move a window by dragging its title bar. Double-click the title bar to put it back in its usual place.
  • Resize a window by dragging its right edge, bottom edge or the grip in its bottom-right corner. Everything inside, text included, grows or shrinks with it. Double-click an edge or the grip to go back to the normal size.
  • Each window remembers its own place and size on that computer.
  • Click a window to bring it to the front. Esc closes the one on top.
  • On large, high-resolution screens windows start a little bigger. Interface size in Settings makes them (and the rest of the HUD) bigger or smaller.

Keys are ignored while you're typing in a text box, so chatting never makes your hero wander off.

Settings worth knowing

Open Settings (the cog, or O):

  • Auto-retaliate: fight back when attacked, and finish the pack you tapped.
  • Auto-cast abilities: fire your abilities as they come off cooldown while fighting. It never uses abilities that move you, like Charge. On by default on phones; off by default on a computer.
  • Auto-loot: pick up gear you walk over, and nearby gear when no enemies are close. Off: gear stays until you tap it.
  • Loot filter: choose which gear gets a label on the ground, with presets, rules, highlight colours and sounds. Auto-loot never picks up what it hides. See Loot Filter & Auto-loot.
  • Damage numbers and Minimap: on or off.
  • Interface size (computers): make the HUD and windows bigger or smaller on a large monitor.
  • Sound effects and Music volume.
  • Account recovery: your recovery code. Keep it safe.
